Debary Area Guide
Known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, DeBary is a great place to visit or to live. Thousands of oak trees, a bird sanctuary and an extensive park system bring even more beauty to the natural habitat as well as the former vacation home of New York wine magnate Federick DeBary. DeBary bought 400 acres on the northern shore of the St. John’s River from original owner Elijah Watson in 1866 before the area became well known.
DeBary proceeded to build an 8,000 square foot, 20 room winter home, welcoming visitors such as Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland, inviting them to enjoy the rich hunting area. Through the years he bought an additional 9,000 acres as well as a steamboat to transport fruit and furniture and everything in between.
Today, the city of DeBary serves as a corridor between Orlando, Sanford and Daytona Beach. Incorporated in 1993, the population of almost 19,000 boasts amenities the big city has, offering a diversity of lifestyle from upscale country clubs with championship golf courses, rural areas roamed by beautiful horses and riverside homes.
Historically environmentally sensitive, DeBary maintains that delicate balance between nature and technology. With its low taxes and business friendly atmosphere, parks and events the whole family can enjoy, DeBary is a great place to live, to work and to raise a family.
